A global perspective of the great white beasts

In the Andes there has been a loss of 30-50% in area of their tropical glaciers since the 1970s. A quick and short update of state of glaciers worldwide.

This is not a depressing subject rather a enlightening one, as we are so fortunate to witness such magnificence.

All of this may seem like a fight that has been lost, but there is much to act on and there is much to document of these complex and intriguing white beasts. When the weight of glacier losses come bearing down on me, I gain perspective from those on the land. The Greenland Inuit say:

“When life gives us lemons, we make glacially iced lemonade."

“We just go with the floe. If the Earth warms and waters rise, then we’ll live in boats. If it cools and everything freezes again, then the world is our igloo.”

Over the past month, I have been monitoring glaciers in the Columbia River Basin. It has been a magnificent journey where temperatures ranged from -26 C to +18 C. I'll write soon to tell you what I saw...
